REDCap online surveys and databases

REDCap is a secure, low-cost, online data capture system designed and developed for clinical research. The features of REDCap help to reduce the effort and costs involved in collecting and storing clinical data.
Using REDCap, study teams can build electronic forms quickly and with little or no support from Data Management teams.  Research data can be collected directly from participants or entered by health professionals and researchers, from anywhere with an Internet connection.  Generic or participant-specific surveys can be sent at designated time-intervals and where an Internet connection is unavailable, data can be captured through the REDCap mobile app.

The REDCap system supports the whole data lifecycle – data collection, validation, question filtering, reporting and storage. In addition, REDCap provides automated export procedures for downloading data to common statistical packages (Stata, SPSS, SAS, R).  REDCap data are stored in a central University of Bristol server.

Due to the confidential nature of data collected by medical researchers only anonymised data should be entered into REDCap. Participant identifiable data must be stored in an alternative system to the medical data.

REDCap uses a high availability MySQL Cluster that is managed by University of Bristol Central IT Services and maintained in line with their policies regarding security, resilience and backups (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/infosec/policies/). REDCap uses Table Based username and password security, and a granular security model so users only see the data and functionality they require. REDCap maintains an audit trail of all actions including data changes made to the system. Access to the system is via an encrypted SSL website. The final data set is exported in csv format for long term storage and sharing.

REDCap projects in the Bristol Medical School

REDCap is the BRMS standard data management tool for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in primary and secondary care, as well as non-NHS settings such as schools and public health.  REDCap accommodates a wide range of studies from NIHR supported complex trials to feasibility studies, both single and multi-centre.  REDCap is currently being used in 94 open trials and 97 projects in development.
